History of Shrule by J.B. McHugh

For various reasons the Parish of Shrule holds a unique place in the Galway Diocese. This parish, surrounded as it is on all sides by the Archdiocese of Tuam, is completely isolated from the remainder of the diocese to which it belongs. There is, perhaps, no other parish which has had such a chequered carter, as it belonged, in turn, to the ancient dioceses of Cong and Annaghdown, then to the Archdiocese of Tuam, and later to the Wardenship of Galway, before being finally included in the diocese which replaced that peculiar institution.
